Ryan had a Sunday matinee gig in Half Moon Bay so the kids and I joined him for the gorgeous 45 min. drive and I planned on taking the kids to the beach for a couple hours... because Anna LOVES the beach. Riley is not impressed. He never has been impressed by the ocean. The sand freaks him out and, though he loves going in the pool, the ocean waves don't appeal to Riley's sensitive senses. Still, we always try to help him to better understand and approach uncomfortable situations. So, gung-ho Anna helped get Riley out of the car, held his hand, and excitedly dragged him down the path to the beach.
As soon as they approached the sand, Riley came to a halt, said, "No," about-faced, and scrambled straight back up the hill requesting, "Go home... go home..."
We chased Riley back through the parking lot and I thought briefly about giving up and just letting him hang out in the car, but then I saw the bench.
"Hey, buddy do you see that bench over there? Let's grab our lunch and go sit on that bench. No ocean, no beach, just the bench."
Surprisingly, he agreed...
...and this is where he stayed for the next hour & a half....
I knew I couldn't keep this girl from the water, so I let Anna head down to the beach and Skype me from there (ah, modern technology to help safeguard our kids). I was only able to take a few steps away to shoot some photos of Anna before Riley yelled, "Mommy! Bench!" and patted the empty space next to him...
As I sat with Riley and took in the view, he watched YouTube videos and Sesame Street, lifting his head every once in a while to say, "No." when I would suggest we go find Anna or walk closer to look at the water.
I was itching to wander and take some pictures, but Riley is more like the ocean than the ocean is - in that you never want to turn your back on it/him - so I stayed put and just took some shots from the bench...
...and some shots of BanAnna doing her tuna sandwich dance...
...then Anna ran back down to the water to search for shells, so I started taking pictures of (strangers near) the beach.
